What’s the deal with Charter Member certificates?

Krista Wall (Microsoft)

What is a Charter Member certificate?

Candidates who earn an MCTS, MCITP, or MCPD certification within six months from the first date that the certification can be earned are eligible for Charter Member status. Charter Members receive a special Charter version of the certificate. This enables candidates who are early adopters of the certification to differentiate themselves from other candidates who hold the same certification.

Why can’t I download the Charter version of the certificate?

If you think you should have earned Charter Member status for an exam you passed within the last three or four months, but you didn’t see “Charter” on your certificate, you’re not alone. In the transition to digital certificates, the process for getting Charter certificates set up in our systems sort of broke. Some certifications released after the transition were impacted. Many of you called your RSCs to report this, but from the perspective of the customer service person looking at our systems, it looked as though you weren’t eligible.

Charter version now available for affected certificates

We started to get questions here on Born To Learn about whether Charter membership had been discontinued—which it hasn’t! We investigated based on your reports, and found that indeed, some certifications were configured incorrectly.

The following certifications were affected. The Charter version of the certificate became available either in February or just yesterday:

  • MCTS: Windows Mobile 6.5, Configuration
  • MCTS: Windows Mobile 6.5 Application Development
  • MCTS: Windows Embedded Standard 7
  • MCTS: Microsoft Exchange Server 2010, Configuration
  • MCITP: Enterprise Messaging Administrator 2010
  • MCTS: Windows 7, Configuration
  • MCTS: Preinstalling Windows 7 for OEMs
  • MCITP: Enterprise Desktop Support Technician 7
  • MCITP: Enterprise Desktop Administrator 7

Wondering what the associated exam numbers are? Well, I’m not telling. And the reason I’m not telling is that I want to reinforce that the Charter status is associated with the certification, not with the exam. This is an important distinction for several reasons. For example, you won’t earn Charter status for an MCITP certification unless you pass the Pro level exam plus any required TS exam(s) for that certification within 6 months of the earliest date that the certification can be earned.

For upgrade exams, the six months actually starts counting down when the last of the component exams is released in its live form. So if you’re planning to take 682 (the upgrade to EDST7) and want to get Charter status, you better get hopping like the proverbial bunny. You have less than 2 months left because 685 (the Pro level requirement for EDST7) was released in mid-November.

Why doesn’t Charter Member status appear on my transcript?

Charter Member status does not currently appear on a candidate’s transcript. We’d have to turn our systems upside down and backwards in order to support showing Charter status on transcripts. We are evaluating whether this change could be made at some point in the future.

Of course you have forgot to tell us that Microsoft will resend for free all certs that were printed with YOUR ERROS!

I still haven't got Beta Exam Score from exam I have took at the end of 2009!

Oh and I am waiting for Welcome Kit that I was promised to get on Prometric Score Report last month.

    Hi Steve,

*I'm checking on what we can do if you already paid for a printed certificate and will get back to you.

*If you're waiting for 693 results, we expect them to go out this week or next.

*We no longer ship Welcome Kits. We are in the process of updating the score reports to remove that reference.

    Thanks.

    Krista

    Hi there,

Just a question for my candidates (I'm a Trainer):

Most of my candidates will make the exam in German. Are those 6 months related to the general public availibility to the english exam, or is it language specific?

    Thanks for clarification!

What about old Charter Member certification - form for example 2008-2009? It should be in our download as Charter Member or not? If  we passed it as charter member of course.

Thanks for the update. Was wondering why I had 2 of the 3 for Win7, the third should show up soon. My boss actually noticed the green bar and asked about it.

I have passed MCTS: Windows 7, Configuration in May 2009 (beta period). Do you think I would get a Charter version?

    Thanks

    Hi, Krista

*****I'm checking on what we can do if you already paid for a printed certificate and will get back to you.

I will tell you not what you can do, but what you SHOULD and MUST do for customers that have paid for your certificates. You must fulfill agreement we had "signed" with you - send us what we have paid for. It is that simple.

*****If you're waiting for 693 results, we expect them to go out this week or next.

I'm talking about 71-685. I know others that haven't got results from it.

*****We no longer ship Welcome Kits. We are in the process of updating the score reports to remove that reference.

LOL. Will you remove that reference from my score report print that I have got from Prometric?

How much time do you need for removing 6 lines of your PROMISE? Welcome kits are discontinued for 9 months, that means you are  unable to remove text with amazing speed of 1 line per 1.5 month.

I am asking again will you fulfill you PROMISES from agreements and will you fulfill statements made with black ink/toner on white paper with your logo?

Looks you have All Fools' Day for whole year!

@ Peter and Robert: I'm checking on your questions and will get back to you.

@ m: Yes, if you passed a beta exam, you should be eligible for charter member status. Check whether a charter version of those certificates is now available for download. Two days ago, you wouldn't have seen them. Today you should. Let me know if you don't.

@ Steven McEvoy: I like you. You're nice.

@ Joe and Bala: If you earned MCTS: Windows 7, Configuration before December 1, 2009, then I think you should be eligible for charter membership. Check whether a charter version of that certificate is now available for download. Two days ago, you wouldn't have seen it. Today you should. Let me know if you don't.

@ steveb: send your MCPID to mslcd@microsoft.com, and I'll see what I can do to address your concerns.

I took the Win 7, Configuring exam on Nov. 30 of '09 and I don't have Charter status.  Can you verify the exact date you needed to pass that exam to get the status Krista?

    Krista,

I am repeating my question one more time here - please give me simple answers YES or NO. There are 7 questions, 6 with YES or NO, one with [9-infinity] months value.

    1) I have asked here in comments and would like to see your/MSL answers here, there are many others affected  among 2 mln MCPs during last 9 months that might be interested in this too. Why are you trying to move this conversation off public? Do you have something to hide? Answer YES or NO

***** Krista: I'm checking on what we can do if you already paid for a printed certificate and will get back to you.

    2) I will tell you not what you can do, but what you SHOULD and MUST do for customers that have paid for your certificates. You must fulfill agreement we had "signed" with you - send us what we have paid for. It is that simple. Does MSL words have any value left, do you think agreements should be fulfilled by both sides? Answer YES or NO.

*****Krista: If you're waiting for 693 results, we expect them to go out this week or next.

    3) I'm talking about 71-685. I know others that haven't got results from it. Am I the only one that is affected. Can you confirm that 685 results have been shipped? Answer YES or NO.

*****Krista: We no longer ship Welcome Kits. We are in the process of updating the score reports to remove that reference.

    4) Will you remove that reference from my score report print that I have got from Prometric? Answer YES or NO?

    5) How much time do you need for removing 6 lines of your PROMISE? Provide number of months (starting from 9)

    6) I am asking again will you fulfill you PROMISES from agreements and will you fulfill statements made with black ink/toner on white paper with your logo? Answer YES or NO.

    7) Does your/MSL words have any value - should we believe in statements made by MSL/Prometric? Answer YES or NO.

I downloaded my certs just before posting my comment, I downloaded them today - no changes, no charter member status. BTW1, there is an error when trying to download certificates in XPS format. BTW2, to complete MCITP in virtualization I have to wait for 669 results - will we get them as late as for 693 or mayby a slightly sooner?
