The Scoring of Upgrade Exams is Changing

As many of you know, the scoring of upgrade exams is different from other exams. However, that's changing, and to your benefit! In the past, you had to pass all components of an upgrade exam in order to pass the exam. For a variety of psychometric and practical reasons, we are redesigning future upgrade exams so that they are scored exactly like a traditional exam. You will no longer be required to pass each component.

Here's how it benefits you...Because of the combined scoring, awesome performance in one component will compensate for poor performance in another component.

Why did I decide to make this change? Well, I wanted to create a more reliable assessment of your skills, and making this change, although it may seem weird, actually will allow me to do that.

Further, we are finding that some component exams are more "important" in the upgrade process. Specifically, some component exams are providing more objectives that should be included in the upgrade process to truly measure continued competence in the content domain--there are more changes in those content spaces (component exams) that need to be assessed in the upgrade exam. If we left the scoring as it exists today, those components providing fewer objectives to the upgrade process would actually be "weighted" more heavily in the final score. This has to do with the magic of numbers, but essentially, to keep the each component of equal weight in the exam scoring process, we typically would have the same number of questions per component (e.g., 20). Those questions are then divided over the objectives from that component exam. So, on a component exam providing 5 objectives, we would include 4 questions per objective, but on a component exam providing only 2 objectives, we would need to include 10 questions per objective, making those objectives a lot more important than the objectives from the other component based on the number of questions per objective. Obviously, this overweights objectives as a function of the number of objectives per component. The cleanest way to solve this problem is to remove the component level scoring.

This change will apply starting with exam 743 (the Windows Server 2016 upgrade exam) and going forward. It will not apply to any upgrade exam currently in market.

    @Packetboy. Andrew is correct. In terms of scoring mechanism applied, there is no difference between beta and live exams, so this applies to 743 in all its forms
