Here at MVA it’s one of our guiding principles that “Your effort and accomplishments should be acknowledged, and we will celebrate your success.” So we are excited to announce that starting today, when you go to the Courses Completed tab on your MVA Dashboard you will notice a link to Degreed where you can create a profile that includes your MVA courses along with your formal education. We encourage you to include a link to your Degreed profile from anywhere you want to showcase all your experience, education and training.
It’s been great to connect with the team at Degreed, and in their own words, from developer Joel Lyons, here’s a little more about the new feature on MVA:
I attended a university in the early 1990’s, working on a Computer Science major. That time period represented the rise of the Internet, and our industry was barely starting to understand what the world wanted from the web and how software needed to change to fit those demands. Within the walls of the university, many of the classes I took were still focused on, what seemed to me, yesterday’s problems. Don’t get me wrong, I learned some timeless principles of software design. But when we consider how software has changed in the last twenty years, if the degree I received in the 90’s is the only representation of my education, I’m in big trouble!
The problem isn’t only about perishable skills. How can someone who has gained considerable knowledge through non-traditional methods like online courses, open-source projects, or bootcamps get the formal recognition needed to get that job, that salary, that contract? What is the alternative credential?
Degreed is taking that challenge head on. Degreed is “jailbreaking the degree” by giving you credit for all types of learning, and we’re excited to announce Microsoft has joined Degreed’s crusade. Now, all your accomplishments at Microsoft Virtual Academy can be easily synced with your Degreed profile. This is directly in line with MVA’s mantra of “Successful technologists never stop learning and great technology never stops evolving.”
Degreed already helps you track and showcase your academic and lifelong learning and now, with the launch of the MVA partnership and integrations with sites like Pluralsight and Coderbits, Degreed is expanding to include your professional learning.
Get recognized for your learning, all of it!
Here at MVA we’ve had lots of requests for deep training about SharePoint, so we are really excited to announce that Christopher Harrison will be returning to our studio to deliver a full day of training that will help you unlock the full power of what can be done with SharePoint. We’ll show how to create apps that will put your users in charge of their own areas of SharePoint and create the custom look, feel, and functionality they want. You’ll get some guidelines and best practices that will help you optimize your SharePoint applications. And you’ll see some cool demos that will show you how to create an app, deploy it to a catalog, and install it.

It was great to recently connect with the winner of last Summer’s Fast Track Challenge, Abhishek Nandy and hear about how he’s continuing to grow his app building skills and getting involved in the community. We exchanged mail when he was on his way back from Dev Camp in New Delhi, and he was kind enough to send along this write up of the event and how it helped him with his projects.
Abhishek Nandy: My Dev Camp experience 29th August 2013 New Delhi, India
What is Dev Camp?
We gathered at the Hotel City Park, and Joseph Landes gave us a perfect overview of the Windows 8 ecosystem and how the app development process makes it easy for up and coming developers to have a global presence. Dev Camp is an interactive way to get in touch with people who are actually from Microsoft and share high level details on the new Microsoft Technologies. Developers can clear their doubts and know how to build apps with the new technologies. There are lots of live demos, and we can get a feeling for the actual flow of the app building process. You connect with excellent speakers to help in your journey.
Attending Dev Camp gave me the opportunity to show my demo apps to Microsoft Technical Evangelist Ujjawal Kumar. He gave me some quick tips about making a few changes that made the app look awesome—everybody is so helpful. It helped me get an insight into the Windows 8.1 update, Windows Phone development and Windows Azure services. Each and every person who is interested in Microsoft Technologies should consider going to these camps to get valuable, direct exposure to Microsoft technology experts.
App Builders Club and MVA
App Builders Club is another great resource to help you blend and develop your app so that you get the best results. You can share app development progress via mail and they will guide and help you in a proper manner so you can make your dream app a reality. And of course, MVA is free academy where we get the chance to learn different Microsoft Technologies in a step by step manner from the Microsoft Experts.
Be sure to look for Abhishek’s NASA Space 3D app, soon to be published in the Windows Store. You’ll see what he learned from the Gaming Engines for Windows 8 Jump Start !
As announced on the Official Microsoft blog earlier this year, Microsoft will no longer provide support for Windows XP users beyond April 8, 2014. This means that customers and partners will no longer receive security updates to the operating system or be able to leverage tech support from Microsoft after this time.
Moving away from Windows XP to a more modern platform will ready your IT infrastructure for future technology solutions and growth of your company. In order to help IT professionals and businesses plan their migration from Windows XP environments to Windows 7, the MVA team is offering a new course: Automating Migration from Windows XP to Windows 7.
The course describes the steps to take and the tools that will help make the migration and set-up process seamless while providing business continuity and dives into application compatibility planning, tools, troubleshooting, and remediation. This course is free for all IT professionals - please share it with your partners, colleagues, and clients.
