I want to learn SQL and change directions in my career. Currently I am a Network Admin but would like to learn databases. I do have some programming knowledge that I took in my early college career C++, Pascal, Cobol and some Database work. I would like to know what materials would be good to use to learn SQL and how to manage and program in it.
Thanks in advance.
Hi,
This would depend on whether you are interested in SQL Admin or development or BI.
Here is a great Microsoft Learning page that will give you SQL Server certification path roadmaps to consider and where to get training for the path you choose.
www.microsoft.com/.../cert-sql-server.aspx
Thanks but I have no real experience with SQL. I need a starting point like a beginner class, does MS offer something like that or do I need to self study. I looking into taking a online Introductory course to SQL.
Yes, You might be interested in starting the latest MTA certification for Database Administration Fundamentals (Exam 98-364)
as a beginning that might help you decide if you want to go down the path of Admin, Developer or BI ..... It was just released on August 2, 2010 ...
I had opportunity to actually take this exam a few days ago at the MCT 2010 Live Summit in Yor UK and earned the MTA myself.. I found it very concise and comprehensive.

A good Learning Plan to follow can be found at: learning.microsoft.com/.../LearningPlanV2.aspx
Also, you might want to couple the learning plan above with this site to study for the syntax part of the exam as I find this site very good for learning TSQL syntax: w3schools.com/.../default.asp
... and then move on from there or go straight into the MCTS for the area that most interests you ....
...Hope it helps
:)
Also, here is the Career Path Toolkit page that might help you chart the path for database developer.

This is from the new Microsoft Learning Career Portal: Chart Your Career: www.microsoft.com/.../default.aspx
