1  Understanding Server Installation

1.1  UNDERSTAND DEVICE DRIVERS

  • Understanding Device and Driver Installation (TechNet)
  • What is a driver? Think of device drivers as files that act as the “dictionaries” that teach your PC’s hardware components how to communicate with one another and the programs and software you’ve installed on your computer.Device drivers are loaded into and run within a very critical and sensitive part of your PC: the Windows kernel, which is the core of your computer’s operating system—so a communication error caused by an incompatible driver can severely affect the entire system. 1.2  UNDERSTAND SERVER SERVICES

  • -Located above the TDI & is implemented as a file system driver (Technet)
  • -Server service supplies connections requested by client-side redirectors
  • -Provides them access to the resources they request

1.3  UNDERSTAND SERVER INSTALLATION OPTIONS

  • - There are two options to choose from when installing windows server 2012
  • 1)  Server core installation
  • 2)  Server with a GUI
  • - Option 2 (server with the GUI) is the Windows 2012 equivalent of the full installation option in windows server 2008 R2
  • - Option 1 (server core installation) reduces disk space required & reduces the potential attack surface
  • - Server core installation also reduces servicing requirements
  • - Server core install is now the default option
  • - You can switch between option 1 & 2 at any time
  • - Server roles & features that are not needed can be removed (binary files) to conserve space/ security
