MTA Exam thoughts:
When I took the first exam - Configuring: Windows 7, 680, I failed it even on my second chance. The questions were very detailed and seemed particular and descriptive compared to the study materials I had available with my self-paced study kit. I did not know
Microsoft was kind to recommend that I take these MTA exams to not only boost my confidence with the Windows 7 material but to also go ahead and get some certifications under my belt.
The 98-349 MTA Exam:
This MTA exam was different story than my TS exam. It was extremely simple. During the test it seemed VERY easy. I felt like many of the questions were general to IT professionals, compared to the questions I did on the MCTS exam. One in my MTA exam questions even had misspelling in it! This put less value on the MTA than I had hoped because it had a typo in it. Nevertheless, I felt like the MTA exam was constructed in a checkpoint-manner for me to work up confidence for TS exams in the future.
There are Networking, Security, and Admin MTA exams to study for next. They are extra certs that I can complete to find my strengths/weaknesses with Windows 7 as a whole.
My goals:
- Complete 2 more MTA exams (at least)
- MeasureUp practice exams before my MCTS retake
- Gain an MCTS cert before TechEd
- Pursue MCTIP during or after TechEd
- Pursue interest in Server 2008 or Administration exams thereafter
From Amanda, one of our content managers: Kevin, mind giving me a ping? I'd love to find out where the typo was so we can fix it moving forward. amandaw@microsoft.com. Thanks kindly, Amanda

hi Kevin, good move to try the MTA level first - they will give you a confidence boost and they are more generic and "easier".
Don't worry about typos - sure they should not be there and they can distract you. As for the TS level - they are tricky, and require a sound understanding and ideally 6 months usage of the product in the job role. Exam takers with good experience of IT often find them challenging but not rock hard. The MeasureUps should help - also have you seen the Windows Phone 7 App - "Certification" that has another 100 mock questions to help you prepare. As much practice as you can will help for sure.
What were your scores for the 680 exam. Did you improve over the 2 sittings?
You may find the MCTIP slightly easier (you can take them in any order) - which one are you aiming for?
Finally, you can take exams whilst at TechEd - reach out to the Study Hall and Cram Session proctors there - they ROCK and can help you focus your learning on areas which you are week.
See you at TechEd and good luck!
Andrew
