Microsoft Career Factor Reflection (part 1)

When I originally applied for Career Factor, I did so with unknown expectations. I delighted in the opportunity. I also figured that Microsoft certifications were easy and that it was difficult to talk to other professionals that already have certifications. This is not the case. Sure, I have managed to not pass those first two attempts at the Windows 7 : Configuring exam, but this doesn't mean anything but the fact that I haven't been given the time this semester I thought I would have until now - a month from graduating.

Now that my only full-time "jobs" are school and job searching (quit my campus job for more homework time), I can focus on a little more time for my Windows 7 training kit, Exam cram sessions, and even Microsoft e-learning. I hope that these opportunities are fulfilling and I am doing them today, actually.

I spent an hour yesterday after my mock interview today with DBU's business office looking at job sites and speaking with recruiters. Mentors like Carolyn Monk, David Notgrass, and so many other professors at DBU are so helpful in setting up BBA seniors with the skill to succeed.

I put my resume out; therefore people have started to call. Communications tend to fall through. I inquired why this was happening because it bothered me that at the last minute, contacts or offers would fall through and it solidifies my theory - certifications are extremely important and so is graduation. Having these completed will help me reach the start of my career.

So I am going to pursue a less comprehensive exam: MTA exams and e-learning for 680. I will not give up! : )

All that said - I am working to push on. Hope giving status updates like these are good for the many out there that are in the same situations as me.  When you're in school or just out of it, focus on the task at hand.

Over Facebook & Twitter, people receive and give some of the most inspiring comments. Thank you for those who collaborate and ask questions.  I will reflect more on the whole experience of Career Factor in the next three weeks as well as this reflection! Thank you everyone!

  • The Career Factor participants are thinking about certification a lot these days: Caroline is working

  • Microsoft is using social media as foundation for a web-based reality show following the career quests of nine participants. You can follow their exploits online (e.g., at work when the boss isn't looking), no television required. The Career Factor website went live last week, but the nine participants only started updating their quests yesterday. The website describes itself as an "online reality show based on the experiences of nine IT personalities. Each of our candidates have set a professional goal for themselves, and have invited you to follow their every step along the way." Each participant has a personal page where "you can explore their backgrounds, learn from their experiences and share your findings. You'll find videos, links to learning resources, tips and updates via their blog and various social media outlets."
