You compose an e-mail complaining about your boss, and somehow send it to your boss.

It’s never pretty when these things happen; and, when we make mistakes like this we usually feel like idiots. Fortunately, there’s always someone just a little worst to make us all feel just a wee bit better about our own mistakes.

Each quarter, Microsoft Learning will feature several case studies based on a compilation of recent issues. Certain facts will be changed for illustrative purposes and to conceal the identities of the parties involved. The actions described below represent Microsoft’s efforts to curb cheating, fraud & piracy to maintain the value of Microsoft Certifications.

Protecting Microsoft’s IP: Disclosing Microsoft intellectual property (IP)

Chris Preston, who worked at a test center in Dublin, Ireland, was engaged to be married soon. The closer the wedding date arrived, the more he realized he needed extra funds to cover his wedding expenses. Thinking of no better way to make a few extra Euros, Chris chose to sell Microsoft Certification exam content on a popular English tech blog. Chris knew better than to use his real name on the blog; he used an alias: IT GENIOUS (of course!). Every day for a week Chris (a.k.a IT GENIOUS) signed-into the blog using his corporate email address and posted Microsoft Certification exam content. When Microsoft discovered these leaks, we investigated. A few clicks and a few IP addresses revealed the source of the posting: Chris@litwareinc.com. Microsoft requested that the authorities bring criminal charges against him.

Microsoft takes the protection and management of our Intellectual Property seriously. Unauthorized disclosure of confidential information has a profound business impact, and may lead to civil liability or criminal prosecution. Confidential information leaks can devalue Microsoft Certifications, and breach the trust of customers, business partners, governments and communities. Abuses of this nature are not tolerated.

All Microsoft Certification exams, including the content and wording of exam questions, are Microsoft confidential information and protected by intellectual property laws. Microsoft’s Exam Security and Integrity policy states:

Examples of misconduct and/or misuse of the Exam include, but are not limited to, the following: Copying, publishing, disclosing, transmitting, selling, offering to sell, posting, downloading, distributing in any way, or otherwise transferring, modifying, making derivative works of, reverse engineering, decompiling, disassembling or translating any Exam in whole or in part, in any form or by any means, verbal or written, electronic or mechanical, for any purpose

For general questions regarding security issues and questions, contact the Microsoft Learning - Security Team (mlsecure@microsoft.com).

If you have any information regarding piracy, exam fraud, violations or abuse, you are asked to contact Training & Certification Tips (tctips@microsoft.com)

________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Theft

Here's a remarkable example of theft.

During a customer event, Microsoft Learning distributed Microsoft Certification exam vouchers to event attendees who participated in a customer survey. The fine print clearly stated that vouchers were available to survey respondents, limit one voucher per customer, and vouchers had no resale value.

Bonnie Kearney, who attended the event, returned to the survey booth multiple times over the 5-day event. She made sure different people were managing the booth and proceeded to answer the same survey over and over again. She walked away from the event with 17 vouchers. The assessed retail value of each voucher was approximately US$150.

One week later, Microsoft Learning Security was informed that Microsoft Certification exam vouchers were being sold on Proseware.com (a popular online auction website). Working with Proseware’s compliance team, Microsoft Learning Security was able to track the seller’s account.

The details of the theft were uncovered as part of a Microsoft Learning Security investigation. Bonnie admitted to fraudulently obtaining and selling “maybe 10” vouchers to out of state individuals who paid US$100 for each stolen voucher. Bonnie Kearney admitted to using the proceeds to pay for her own Desktop Support – Enterprise exam and training resources.

Bonnie was permanently banned from the Microsoft Certification Program. The matter has been referred to law enforcement.

For general questions regarding security issues and questions, contact the Microsoft Learning - Security Team (mlsecure@microsoft.com).

If you have any information regarding piracy, exam fraud, violations or abuse, you are asked to contact Training & Certification Tips (tctips@microsoft.com)

__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Not So Sharp!

If you’re ever arrested for smuggling, an excuse that almost never works is “Idunno.”

Last March, Shuh San Chan (曾澍山) walked into a testing facility in China to take Exam 70-668: PRO: Microsoft SharePoint 2010, Administrator. Before walking into the examination room, per the proctor’s instructions, Shuh San = placed his belonging in a locker… all but one…

45 minutes into the exam, the proctor noticed Shuh San pushing himself away from the desk and holding his hand towards the computer screen. Upon further observation the proctor realized that Shuh San was bold enough to sneak a cell phone into the examination room. The cell phone was examined fully and it was confirmed that Shuh San had taken screen-shots of the exam. Shuh San’s response when approached by the proctor: “Idunno”.

This is completely against Microsoft Certification Exam policy. Shuh San’s exam was immediately stopped, the screen shots were purged from his cell phone and he was escorted out of the testing center. But it didn’t end there. Shuh San was permanently banned from the Microsoft Certification Program and is no longer eligible to participate in the program. Worst yet, Shuh San worked for A. Datum Corporation, when his employer requested validation of Microsoft Certification; Shuh San could not provide it and had to reveal that he did not receive his MCITP Certification and was no longer a Microsoft Certified Professional; a requirement of his employment.

Although this particular candidate was blatantly involved in content theft, any type of cheating is not tolerated. It erodes the value of Microsoft Certifications. “Idunno” is not an excuse. Candidates should familiarize themselves with all Microsoft Certification exam policies and procedures prior to taking a Microsoft Certification exam.

If a candidate is caught cheating, violating testing rules, or diminishing the security and integrity of the Microsoft Certification exams in any way, the candidate may be prohibited from taking any Microsoft Certification exams and/or may be decertified from the Microsoft Certification Program. Such fraud includes, but is not limited to, the following: Unlike more advanced Microsoft certifications, the MTA targets students with no prior IT or development experience or employment. It is available exclusively in educational settings and is designed to easily integrate into the curricula of existing computer classes. The MTA will eventually be available in thousands of high schools, vocational programs, and colleges in the U.S. and other countries. Testing will be conducted by Certiport, a commercial testing service, at participating schools.

Visit the MTA website (and click here to view the Microsoft PressPass feature). The program’s FAQs are here.

Here are the exams offered through the MTA program:
We recently released a very cool two-way integration between Microsoft Word and Microsoft Dynamics CRM, and I thought you might be interested to check it out! In summary, our proprietary Word-to-CRM integration allows users to:

Build Word document templates that can load data from Microsoft Dynamics CRM

Once the data is loaded, users can edit their data in Microsoft Word and then save their changes back to Microsoft Dynamics CRM

This Word-to-CRM integration allows users to take advantage of the full word processing capabilities of Word, but still allow them to store and save the data back into CRM. We use this tool internally for our project charter, specifications, etc. but we also have clients using it for documents like leases, approval letters, quotes, legal notifications, etc. This tool fits in perfectly with many different XRM development stories, and it can support both on-premise AND Microsoft Dynamics CRM Online deployments (of course J).

To help show you how the Word-to-CRM integration works, we put together a short 3-minute screen cast demo:

Please check it out when you have a few minutes and let me know if you have any questions or want to learn more.

Thanks,

Mike Snyder

P.S. from Devon: Mike is a coauthor of the Microsoft Press titles Working with Microsoft Dynamics CRM 4.0 and Programming Microsoft Dynamics CRM 4.0.

Blog Post: Windows Phone 7: Almost There! In Chapter 10, “Building Complex
Queries,” you discovered that you can use queries to select the data you want—
even from multiple tables. You also learned under what conditions you cannot update a
field in a query. Now, you can take the concept of queries one step further and use action
queries to change, insert, create, or delete sets of data in your database quickly.

The four types of queries you’ll study in this chapter are

Update query Allows you to update the fields in one or more rows.

Make-table query Allows you to create a new table by selecting rows from one or
more existing tables.

Append query Allows you to copy rows from one or more tables into another table.

Delete query Allows you to remove one or more rows from a table.

Note The examples in this chapter are based on the tables and data in HousingDataCopy.accdb
and ContactsDataCopy.accdb on the companion CD included with this book. These
databases are copies of the data from the Housing Reservations and Conrad Systems
Contacts sample applications, respectively, and they contain the sample queries used in
this chapter. The query results you see from the sample queries that you build in this
chapter might not exactly match what you see in this book if you have changed the
sample data in the files.

Updating Groups of Rows

It’s easy enough to use a table or a query in Datasheet view to find a single record in your
database and change one value. But what if you want to make the same change to many
records? Changing each record one at a time could be very tedious.

Remember that in Chapter 9, you learned how to construct queries to test proposed new
validation rules. In the HousingDataCopy.accdb database, there’s a table-level validation
rule defined in tblFacilityRooms that doesn’t let you enter a WeeklyRate value that
is greater than seven times the DailyRate value. If you want to change this rule to ensure
that the WeeklyRate value is no more than six times the DailyRate value (thereby ensuring
that the weekly rate is a true discount), you must first update the values in the table to
comply with the new rule.

\You could open tblFacilityRooms in Datasheet view and go through the individual rows
one by one to set all the WeeklyRate values by hand. But why not let Microsoft Access
2010 do the work for you with a single query?

Testing with a Select Query

Before you create and run a query to update many records in your database, it’s a good
idea to first create a select query using criteria that select the records you want to update.
You’ll see in the next section that it’s easy to convert this select query to an update query
or other type of action query after you’re sure that Access will process the right records.

You could certainly update all the rows in tblFacilityRooms, but what about rows where
the WeeklyRate value is already less than or equal to six times the DailyRate value? You
don’t want to update rows that already meet the proposed validation rule change—you
might actually increase the WeeklyRate value in those rows. For example, a room might
exist that has a DailyRate value of $50 and a WeeklyRate value of $275. If you blanket
update all rows to set the WeeklyRate field to six times the DailyRate field, you’ll change the
WeeklyRate value in this row to $300. So, you should first build a query on tblFacilityRooms
to find only those rows that need to be changed.

Open HousingDataCopy.accdb and start a new query on tblFacilityRooms. Include the
FacilityID, RoomNumber, DailyRate, and WeeklyRate fields. Enter the criterion >[DailyRate]*6
under the WeeklyRate field. Your query should look like Figure 11-1.

When you run the query, you’ll see 276 records that you want to change, as shown in Figure
11-2. (There are 306 records in the table.)

Converting a Select Query to an Update Query

Now you’re ready to change the query so that it will update the table. When you first create
a query, Access builds a select query by default. You can find commands for the four
types of action queries—make-table, update, append, and delete—in the Query Type
group of the Design contextual tab below Query Tools, as shown in Figure 11-3. (Switch
back to Design view if you haven’t already done so.) Click Update to convert the select
query to an update query.

When you convert a select query to an update query, Access highlights the Update button
in the Query Type group when the query is in Design view and adds a row labeled Update
To to the design grid, as shown in Figure 11-4. You use this row to specify how you want
your data changed for those rows that meet the query’s criteria. In this case, you want to
change the WeeklyRate value to [DailyRate]*6 for all rows where the rate is currently too
high.

Blog Post: Deploying Windows 7, but still running Web applications based on Internet Explorer 6?

Join us live at 9:00 AM Pacific Time on Thursday, September 30, 2010 for a virtual, interactive roundtable discussion on migration strategies, standards, and support for organizations moving from Internet Explorer 6 to Internet Explorer 8.

As organizations deploy Windows 7, many still depend on web applications that were designed for Internet Explorer 6.
