Exam/Certification Update 2 - MCSD: Web Applications

Exam/Certification Update 2 - MCSD: Web Applications

Larry Kaye - MSL

To help students stay current with the latest Web Application development processes, Exams 486 and 487 will be refreshed on April 30, 2014 to cover solutions based on Visual Studio 2013, MVC 5, and recent developments in Windows Azure.

Details on the exam updates, in the form of side-by-side comparisons of exam objectives, are now available for review through the "content covering Visual Studio 2013, MVC5, and updates to Windows Azure" link in the Skills Measured section of each Exam Detail web page:

Please note that, while the exam numbers will not change, the MVC version will be removed from the titles of Exam 70-486.  Due to the limited number of changes to the exam topics, updates to the related Microsoft Official Courseware (MOC) are not planned at this time.

As Web Application and Azure development go hand-in-hand, we have also recently extended the upgrade path for MCPD: Web Developer 4 to MCPD: Windows Azure Developer credential holders:

We recognize that developers rely on self-study materials to stay current with technology, so we've grown our developer library of recorded video training on Microsoft Virtual Academy.  Here are the most recent offerings to help students prepare for the Web application development exams:

    Great information, Larry - thanks!

    Here's an oddball question for you.

    If someone passes 70-492 UPGRADE for MCSD: Web Applications and then wants to also earn the MCSD: SharePoint Applications - does he/she still need to pass the exams 70-480 and 70-486?

    Or, could they just get by with 70-488 and 70-489?

    Thank you in advance!

    UPDATE - my question was invalid. trying again.

    Imagine someone who has the MCPD: Web Developer 4 certification who then successfully passes 70-492 and 70-480 to upgrade to MCSD: Web Applications.

    If they also want to earn the MCSD: SharePoint Applications certification, do they still need to pass 70-486?

    ...or can they earn the MCSD SharePoint title by just passing 70-488 and 70-489?

    Thank you.

    I get an email from this certification challenge every 10 minutes.

    How do I unsubscribe to this.

    This is so frustrating.

    @Davin, if you look in the certification planner on the MCP Member site "Upgrade your MCPD: Web Developer 4 to MCSD: Web Applications" is listed as an alternate "core requirement" to the 480 and 486 exams.

    @Davin & Robert:

    Sorry for the confusion.

    Yes, there is an alternative path to MCSD: SharePoint Applications for web developers who have already taken Exam 492.  However, the path was implemented incorrectly in the cert planner tool, as both Exam 480 and Exam 492 are required for the certification.

    I am correcting the issue now, and you should see the update in both cert planner, as well as the MCSD: SharePoint Applications web page, by the end of next week.

    Regards,

    Larry

    No news about "Recertification for MCSD: Web Applications 493"?

    Certification Planner says I need to complete this as yet non-existent exam to to maintain my MCPD (at least I've got until August 23rd!)

    The previous post (borntolearn.mslearn.net/.../exam-certification-update-mcsd-web-applications.aspx) said this would be out in "March 2014". Already April where I am, but I guess there's still a few hours left in March for some timezones :-)

    Hi Larry,

    Thank you for the update. It is good to see Microsoft keeping certifications up-to-date.

    However, I am disappointed in the decision not to update the related MOCs.

    I am a Microsoft Certified Trainer who probably delivers more 20486s and 20487s than any other trainer in the UK. In my opinion these courses are now embarrassingly out-of-date. Over the last six months I have had to create more and more of my own materials to cover all the great new features in Visual Studio 2013 for web and service developers.

    I give my (and Microsoft's!) customers the best learning experience I can and make sure to cover all the topics in the 70-486 and 70-487 exams, not just those topics in MOCs 20486B and 20487B. More and more that means not teaching from the MOCs.

    The 20487B content is especially egregious in this regard having only one module (out of 14) about Data Access and the Entity Framework despite the exam preparation guide saying those topics cover 44% of the exam! Yet 20487B includes entire modules on topics such as Windows Azure Access Control Service that don't appear at all in the exam objectives and anyway will be replaced by Microsoft Azure Active Directory.

    Customer demand for training on 20486 and 20487 far outstrips that for the Windows Store courses yet MOCs 20484 and 20485 got a 'C' version update to Visual Studio 2013. Why no love for ASP.NET MVC and Azure developers?

    PLEASE reconsider updating MOCs 20486B and 20487B. Surely Somasegar and ScottGu want Microsoft Official Courseware to reflect all their awesome work and would be willing to throw some money into the Training and Certification group's budget? ;-)

    Cheers,

    Mark the MCT

    Okay - to state things clearly for everyone:

    - If someone has either the MCPD: Web Developer 4 or the MCPD: Windows Azure Developer certification, he/she can easily upgrade to MCSD: Web Applications by passing 70-480 and 70-492, as stated here:

    www.microsoft.com/.../mcsd-web-apps-certification.aspx

    - Upon passing 70-480 and 70-492 to upgrade to MCSD: Web Applications, the tester only needs to pass 70-488 and 70-489 to earn the MCSD: SharePoint Applications certification. DONE!

    In essence, 70-492 is an UPGRADE exam that contains content from the 70-486 and 70-487 exams.

    QUESTION: Since 70-486 and 70-487 are being refreshed to the latest content, will 70-492 also be refreshed?

    Hi, All:

    Microsoft Learning is currently conducting management review of qualifying recertification activities for both MCSD and MCSE credential holders.  We will release more details when available, and ensure that, following that announcement, all affected candidates have sufficient time to complete the activities to renew their certifications.

    Thanks for your patience,

    Larry

    @markjprice

    Thanks for the feedback.  We will consider updates to the Web Applications courses in the coming year.

    @davin

    Given the light refresh we made to exams 486 and 487, Exam 492 will not be updated by the end of April.  We will consider updating this exam within the next few months and notify the community if/when this is planned.

    @davin

    The option to use exam 492 instead of 486 to achieve the MCSD: SharePoint Applications credential can now be viewed at: www.microsoft.com/.../mcsd-sharepoint-apps-certification.aspx

    Thanks for your feedback!
