Update on Visual Studio 2010 Exam Retirement Dates

Update on Visual Studio 2010 Exam Retirement Dates

Veronica Sopher - Microsoft

With the announcement of new Microsoft Certified Solutions Developer (MCSD) credentials, many developers are working on getting current or upgrading their certifications. We admire your enthusiasm around developer certifications and want to help you succeed.

One of the most important questions from you is about the retirement dates for Visual Studio 2010 exams. We have heard you and re-evaluated the schedule. The following Visual Studio 2010 exams that were previously slated to retire on July 31, 2013 will now remain available for all candidates until further notice. No new retirement date has been set. We will announce it when there is an update so you have plenty of time to complete your current VS2010 certification path.

  • 70-511: TS: Windows Applications Development with Microsoft  .NET Framework 4
  • 70-513: TS: Windows Communication Foundation Development with Microsoft .NET Framework 4

  • 70-519: Pro: Designing and Developing Web Applications Using Microsoft .NET Framework 4

We are in the process of updating these exam detail pages on our website, but wanted to post this clarification here now so you can confidently schedule and prepare for your next VS2010 exam.

Here comes the question - the exam "70-516  Accessing Data with Microsoft .NET Framework 4" is required for the Windows Phone Pro exam. When do you plan to update the Windows Phone exams to reflect these retired .NET tests and also recent changes in Windows Phone 8? Thanks. Btw. I am willing to take the Windows Phone 8 beta exams, if there are any in preparation!

@Martin - We are currently evaluating the certification strategy for WP8, and looking at the transferrable and complementary skills between WP8 and Win8. Please stay tuned for new certification announcements here on Born to Learn.

Why the upgrade exams are still being retired?

70-521: Upgrade: Transition your MCPD .NET Framework 3.5 Windows Developer Skills to MCPD .NET 4.0 Windows Applications Developer

70-523: Upgrade: Transition Your MCPD .NET Framework 3.5 Web Developer Skills to MCPD .NET Framework 4 Web Developer

Just to be certain... Do students also still receive the MCTS certification, or can they only take the exam? For example: over at the SQL exams there is a remark that the exams will not retire but "Note that this MCTS certification will only be awarded until July 31, 2013." Is this also the case here?

Thanks, Veronica,  for the clarification. It's in fact important, in my perspective,  to maintain this certifications for a while longer since there are, probably,  thousands of applications based on this exams technologies. Cheers.

Hi Veronica, We are a Gold CPLS partner and want to be sure we give clear and accurate advice to our customers whether  the "MCPD Developer 4" or the "MCTS Developer 4"  certifications will still be obtainable after 31st July 2013.

  • Veronica Sopher - Microsoft

@stephenp - Yes they will. Based on customer demand and feedback the Visual Studio / .NET 4 exams and certifications will remain in market. We have not determined a retirement date at this time so will be available for the foreseeable future and we will provide adequate notice when we make a decision.

    Hi Veronica,

I second Raul in hope that 70-521 retirement will also be delayed. I just managed to complete my 3.5 Pro certification in late December. I took two and a half years to complete six exams, so when I started 2010 certifications were not yet available.

    Kind Regards

I have a question. I was looking at the Skills Development Roadmap. I just got certified for 70-515 (web appliations with.Net framework 4.0) I noticed that the Roadmap isn't showing that certificate anymore. I read here that the exams aren't going to be retired (until further notice). Is there still a roadmap available for these certificates?

    Thx.

This page still shows info about the retirement. www.microsoft.com/.../mcts-certification.aspx

I guess this is not correct then? Thanks

This page is still saying that the exams will be retired  on July 31, 2013. Is correct?
