A Tale of Two MC IDs

Recently I was trying to look up the results for my Microsoft Excel 2010 beta exam. (In case you’re wondering—I passed!) I found the Excel 2010 results by using the MC ID on the printout that I received after taking the exam. However, I noticed that the results from other exams I have taken were NOT THERE. “Dude, where’s my certs?” I thought. I dug through my old e-mail and found the confirmation from one of the other exams—and it had a different Microsoft Certification ID (MC ID).

Whether you are scheduling a MOS exam, a TS exam, or a Pro exam, it is really easy to end up with more than one MC ID. I should have known better, and it happened to me anyway. It may be more effort to find your MC ID when you are scheduling an exam than it is to just create a new MC ID. But the consequence of not putting in the extra effort to find your MC ID is that when you need to see all the Microsoft Certifications you’ve earned all in one place—such as when you want to share your online transcript with your boss—your complete history won’t be there.

If you discover that you have more than one MC ID, you can contact your local Regional Service Center (RSC), and an agent can consolidate your MC IDs for you. 

You can prevent this from happening to you! When you are registering for your exam, consider whether or not you already have an MC ID. If you think you have one, take a couple minutes to look for it before you create a new one. A couple suggestions for where to look:

  • Printed transcript. If you have a printed copy of your transcript, you can find your MC ID on it.
  • Email notifications. Emails you were sent from Prometric or Certiport confirming a registration, or informing you of the results, should include your MC ID. Correspondence with mcphelp, if you’ve had any, will most likely include your MC ID as well.
  • MCP Member site. If you can access the MCP Member site, you can find your MC ID in your online transcript.
  • Regional Service Center. If all else fails, you can call your RSC and they can look up your MC ID.

  • I discovered this a few years ago!  I had started out taking exams at Pearson, then went to Prometric, and never realized that each had created a new ID for me.  No problem, my Regional Service Center took care of it and merged all fo my passes (and fails :)) into one single MCP ID :)  Thanks guys!

  • So, if you merge, does it show the failed ones also? I  had taken some beta exams, which I failed, and rather not have them seen.  Thanks Krista for the tale!  I didn't realize you could get two MC IDs.  I know you get an MC ID number.  If I was getting a different one I really wouldn't have known.  I thought once you get one, it was for life--copy and paste whereever needed.

    Your transcript only shows the exams you passed. On Prometric's web site, you can look at your personal history to see all the exams you have taken at Prometric. But if you share your transcript with an employer or when you print out a copy, only the exams you passed will show up.

    And by all means, you SHOULD use the same MC ID for life! We don't currently make it super-easy to find your MC ID later, but we're aware of that and working on some potential solutions.

  • ShowFail - The way you end up with two MC IDs is by failing to copy and paste your first one where needed into one of your exam registration forms. :)

  • This is fine and dandy when you have a MC ID with the same name. My situation is a little bit different i have two MC ID's one with Alex(newer ID) and the other with Alejandro( older ID). Alex is my nick name I was registered for the OLD NT 4.0 workstation exam by the training cordinator at my old job. I called the RSC but they are saying that the only way to merge my account is to give them legal documentation of the name change. I tried to explain that Alex is a nick name and that no name changes were ever involved. I just gave up. I told them to look at the mailing address that was used to register but as far as they were concerned that wasn't any good. Any suggestions on this one.

  • Been through this several times over the years.  Merged seperate Id's.  Also had my name spelt wrong.  The administrator put a P in my name and wasn't challenged.  I had to send proof of Id to get it changed back correctly.  You also need to check your Id with Pearson Vue they use a different ID number which is mapped to your MCP Id

  • @Alex/Alejandro: that's a tricky one. I'm checking on whether there is something we can do, and I'll get back to you.

  • Just show them your Id to show your name hasn't changed.  Thats what I was required to do.  All sorted now :)

  • I have two MC ID's and my Regional Service Center did not merged my two accounts, deleted the original MC ID and send me the new MC ID...  Problems coming...

    Once i have changed all my information (updated virtual business card, web page, blog info, wallet cards and curriculum) they send me a notification with my old MC ID again.

    Now, i am having problems accesing the MCP Web page (mcp.microsoft.com), im having problems accesing the blog for only MCT's in this webblog, and can't access to my transcript. The time of response of my Regional Service Center by e-mail is too large beetween mail and mail (about 1 week) and cannot solve this issue yet...

    Some ideas?
