Last week, I took the beta version of the Microsoft Office Specialist (MOS) certification exam for both Excel and Word 2010 ... and I survived. I might even admit it was fun. Sadly, I won't know if I passed for two more weeks, but I am hopeful. This exam, like other MOS exams, is interactive. You're presented with a document in the Word 2010 application, and then asked to perform various tasks like sort bullet points in alphabetical order, add artistic effects to text and pictures, and set up co-authoring capabilities. You might be saying, "You can't do that in Word." Yes you can in Word 2010! These new features are easy to use, once you know where to find the commands in the ribbon. If you want to become the "go-to" person in your office, organization, community, or home by being the first to learn these new features, check out the training available for Office 2010. Then validate these skills by becoming an Office Superstar when you earn a Microsoft Office Specialist certification in Office 2010.

Unbelievable. I absolutely refuse to believe it unless provided with free training which forces me to believe it.
When did invites go out for the beta exam? I wish I could have been a part of that.
"sort bullet points in alphabetical order, add artistic effects to text and pictures"
NDA, NDA XD
Michael - Good try! :)
Jing Jong - Sorry we missed you for the first beta. But not to worry - there will be more for our next exams. i'll make sure to post an announcement invite. We were pushing a very tight turnaround timing for this beta in particular and so had to recruit test centers directly. Watch for more testing options coming soon!
And Kimbal Wong - NDA indeed... but are those tasks REALLY on the exam or not... I may have been pulling random examples out of the air to illustrate the point that these exams are in fact performance based on not just multiple choice questions.
Great comments everyone!
I would love to participate on this beta, but although I did receive the invitation, the exam was not available in my country (Portugal) :(
Hi Maria. Sorry you couldn't participate. We will have additional beta opportunities for additional future exams including Project, powerPoint, Outlook, Access, and SharePoint. I will announce the beta timing via the Born to Learn blog as we get closer to the actual dates. Hopefully we'll have a test center located near you for one of those.
