Virtualization exam update—What’s in the box?

Rate This

Many of you have been asking about virtualization exams for some time now. Well, the first of the virtualization exams is entering beta soon, so I guess it’s time to open the box and let you see what’s inside.

Here are the exams we currently have on the development schedule:

  • 70-659: TS: Windows Server 2008 R2, Server Virtualization
  • 70-669: TS: Desktop Virtualization
  • 70-693: Pro: Windows Server 2008 R2, Virtualization Administrator

Passing all three exams will earn you the MCITP: Windows Server 2008 R2, Virtualization Administrator credential.

We’ll be opening registration for the 70-659 beta soon. As with every beta exam, seats are limited. We’ll be using our MSL SME database to recruit for the first round of beta participants. For your best chance of participating, create a SME profile by filling out the survey on the MSL SME site on Microsoft Connect. (See this post for more information.) If you have already created your SME profile, make sure that you update it to reflect your interest in taking a beta exam and your experience with virtualization.

A few days before registration opens, we’ll send a notification to qualified SMEs through Connect. The notification will include the beta code. If you have any questions about setting up your SME profile, feel free to e-mail mslcd@microsoft.com.

  • What is the upgrade path for the folks who got their virtualization cert in late 2008
  • Hi Calidco, here's what the product planner had to say:

Exam 652 will be allowed as a substitute for the new R2 exam (659), so anyone who has that TS credential will not be required to pass the new exam.
  • I passed the 70-652 but would still love to try the new exam and the others. Is that possible?
  • Hmm..I really would like to attend all three of them. If you have any experience with Microsoft Virtualization techniques...will mentioning them in your SME profile enough to be selected?

  • @ David and Helmer: If you set up a SME profile that indicates the following, then you should get advance notification of the beta code: (1) work experience with virtualization; (2) interest in taking a beta exam; and (3) authorization to share your contact info. Receiving the notice is not the same as registering--that part is up to you. As always, beta seats are limited, so you'll need to act quickly for the best chance of getting a seat at the test center nearest you.
  • Sounds interesting. I just filled out my SME profile (didn't know until today that this is available) and hope to be within the program... :-) As an MVP for Windows Virtualization it would be great to be the first on this exams!
  • What is the SME profile and how do you fill it out?
  • Hi Calidco, see this post for instructions about how to complete a SME profile:

  • I'm not typically a complainer, but how on earth can MSFT justify an MCITP for Windows Server 2008 R2, Virtualization Administrator without having taken the 70-403 (TS: System Center Virtual Machine Manager 2008, Configuring) or the equivalent for System Center VMM 2008 R2?!?! While I won't dispute that desktop virtualization is important, I don't see how it relates to "Windows Server 2008 R2 Virtualiation", let alone how it would trump a certification on SCVMM. At the very least they should add a fourth exam to this certification path to require SCVMM.
  • I agree that SCVMM is important for the whole virtualization story, that is why the Server Virtualization TS exam has many SCVMM questions. The decision to not create a new VMM TS exam was based solely on the amount of testable objectives. With the previous exams there was a high degree of overlap between the Server Virtualization TS and the VMM TS so we combined them into one exam.
  • At last! The Virtualization Administrator has arrived! I took the 70-652 in anticipation that it may count as part of the VA certification path, so I'm glad that gamble has paid off ^_^
Can't wait to have a go at these Beta exams!
  • OK, it makes sense that a portion of the server virtualization TS exam has SCVMM questions (I'm assuming the PRO does as well). The problem that I see is that the MCITP certification for Virtualization isn't aligned with the requirements for the Virtualization competency for the MS Partner Program.

Speaking of which, what is the scope for the 70-669 exam? I couldn't find a page on the MSL site that listed the areas tested. I'm hoping that it DOESN'T correspond with the competency requirements for the Partner Program for Desktop Virtualization. The required exams for the PP competency are the 70-401 and 70-656 (SCCM 2007 and MDOP), which doesn't make much sense either (though MDOP does cover App-V).

  • kristaw,

    Exam 70-656 can substitute 70-669 ?

I like others, I think SCVMM exam must be part of credentials to get the MCITP Virtulization...
