Virtual Business Cards: The Update

Back in August, I posted an update on VBC saying it would launch mid to later September

So September passed.  No VBCs.  Now October has almost passed and you re wondering where VBCs are.  Well.  As you can tell, they re not here.  I want to be as transparent as I can with this so I will answer all your questions.

First, I ve been silent on the issue all of October because I was working towards a firm date that I could promise VBCs would launch.  I didn t want to do another "mid to late X" and it still not launch.

With that said, I can announce that VBCs will launch December 8.  That s a promise you can expect us to keep and I m keeping my team on track for that date.

So what caused the delay?  There are some points I really can t go into details but overall we encountered serious difficulities on the business side of this project that led to the delay.  One issue was given the "new-ness" of this type of benefit, there were a lot of privacy concerns, especially when we re storing your private information and allowing others to view your cards publically.  We had to systematically go through the program to ensure that your privacy will not be compromised.

There were other factors in this project that led to this delay.  Suffice to say, however, that our partner doing the VBC development was not part of the reasons.  They were very gracious and patient while we took care of the matters in-house.

On behalf of Microsoft Learning and my team, I personally want to apologize for the delays and the lack of information these few weeks.  However, we ve now turned a corner and are on track for a December 8th launch.  Moving forward, I will answer any questions either via email or if you post a comment and keep you all up to date with this project.

One note I would like to point out is that this is NOT a replacement for wallet cards.  We will not allow these cards to be printed at the moment.  VBCs are here to help you brand yourself on technical forums, emails, social networking sites, and any online property where your identify is your credibility.  We want the world to know that, hey, you re an MCP/MCT and you know what you re talking about.

We recognize that not everyone needs this benefit and still need wallet cards for offline identification.  We re looking at the possibility of orderable wallet cards, much like how certificates are now orderable.  No promises at the moment, but this is something we re digging deep into.

When I get screenshots of the newer features we ve added since last time I ll let you know and post them. Thanks for your patience and we re working as hard as we can to ensure a successful and (now) smooth launch.

  • Thanks a lot but i'm waiting for real wallet cards :)
  • Thanks for the update, Erwin.
  • Thanks Erwin, it's good that this thing will come to fruition in a few weeks. I am happy also that you are looking into offline forms of identifications even though it's not a promise. The fact that you are giving it a thought is good enough to give hope to many MCPs in countries where Internet access is limited or severely limited, actually even here in the UK we still need the wallewt cards so please look at brionging them back as an option.
  • Erwin Chan, please try and get the Plastic Wallet Cards back.
  • Hi good to hear,
    .o/
Also raising my hand to say that ordering wallet cards would be awesome. I'm ever so disapointed I will never have my MCSE on my card now. I always carry my wallet card around just because i think its cool!
  • For the record I am forwarding every single comment about wanting wallet cards to people in the org.
  • Thanx a lot for ur kind responses n support ERWIN..... Appreciated..

But m really looking Forward to order the Wallet Cards...u knw how much we want them back.

    M very much Thankful 2 u man...
Atlast, we(MCP's) got somebody supportive, with whom we can discuss our thoughts n queries...
  • thax 2 u to Andrew....

As u disscussed this(wallet Cards) topic thoroughly n briefly on behalf of MCP's ,very well.

b'coz their r lots of MCP's who r suffering from this wallet cards problem but they were not able to express their problems properly, just as u did on their behalf.

    so thank u again.
  • Thanks Erwin, i hope they recieve all the message and consider them other than archiving them for statistics!
Not everybody participates in online forums, social networking because of the expensive rates for accessing internet in non-euro regions like Asia and Africa where the largest %ge of computer users use MS products well as all MCPs looking for jobs present Wallet Cards to show proof and identification of their credibility in interview which separates them from the rest of the flock.

I want to applaud you for informing us and being one of the people who has been in contact with the forum BUT you know the bottom line of what all the comments in this forum say and represent. Please send them but add an objective voice too.

    Cheers
    Josse
  • Is this VBC's available for MCPs who has got certification in last 2months or should we order the VBC's please provide the solution.
  • VBCs don't need to be ordered. They work exactly like your download-able logos where you log into a site and it checks to see which credentials you are allowed to use. There may be a couple of days lag between your new certification and when it appears in Logo Builder and VBC, but when you first login in December when we go live you should see all your certs.

As far as the ordereable wallet card - just wanted to make clear that it's not a sure shot. It's something we're working on and we'll update everyone on how that goes.
  • Thank You for this update.. please keep us Informed on any changes...
  • VBCs are cool, but as you said its not a replacement for the good old plastic wallet card.
We dont get em for free anymore, thats ok, , but what could be a reason not to sale them to us? We want to buy it, so you should sale it. Everything else is nonsense. Or i just dont get the point.....

  • Right now it's a logistical and business issue. When we discontinued the welcome kit, our vendor shut down the production line. Now they need to determine how to bring it up again, especially when orders may not be consistently coming in like they were before. Additionally, we need to figure out how that will be integrated in the site. Finally, we need to determine whether to use the current plastic stock that we had left over or find something else.

It's not that we don't want to sell it right now, but the logistics to get that operation running without problems is a tough one.
  • I second this motion. I can't say I have acheived MCSE yet, but I was dissapointed to learn that once I achieve MCSA, MCSE, etc I will not have the privilege of showing it off.
