MCP Certificates: Then and Now

  • Comments 17

A few weeks ago, I made a side reference to the first MCP exam I ever took (and that Microsoft ever offered!): 70-001.

Eagle-eyed reader Matt caught it and replied, “So I have to ask… what is 70-001?”

Just for you, Matt: I dug out my old certificate to find the name of the exam, and when I looked at it, I knew I had to share it…

My favorite flourish has to be the little crown in the logo. (Can’t you just imagine a Microsoftie looking at the logo and thinking, “Hmmm… it’s just not quite right yet. Needs something… I know: a crown!”)

Oh, and my middle initial isn’t D. It took me years to get Microsoft to change that.

Quite a journey from the above to the below, eh?

Now if only I could get our database team to fix my “certified since 2005 ” to read  “certified since 1993” like it’s supposed to…

Sigh. The more things change…

  • Damn your old...wait a minute...I have that one too...sigh....
  • I m just wondering how many could pass that test today...
  • I m wondering why are you showing it to us. Probably to impress us. That is good. MS certificates and wallet cards were fine things to impress people as someone else pointed that in comments under going green. With MCTS/MCITP and "green" @#$%$ you no longer will have and be able to show credentials after few years. While old certs do obsolete they still have some value like your above - especially those printed by MS. Anyone who takes MCTS/MCITP exam now won t be able to use those credentials few years from now, and probably won t be able to show he has achieved something years ago. In shorter form EPIC FAIL!
  • It would be cool is MS Learning would release that one as a "just for fun" online test. I *think* i would pass. Remember the DEBUG command to wipe your HDD?
  • I do:) Do you remember debug "fast reboot" that avoided POST(wasn t working with every BIOS) ? :)

  • heck yeah - I d be up for trying myself against 001 :) just wondering on a tangent - is there anything stopping the release of no longer available exam content generally? Even if not the last revision as maybe questions could be reused somewhere, but say 3-5 years after retirement or something? If nothing else it d be entertaining to be cruel to the 18 year olds who ve never known life outside a GUI.... ;)
  • Cool! Do you have any other certificates from the 1992-1996 timeframe?
  • Thanks Ken, that s awesome. Makes me a little sad that I only have two of the design revisions (2003 MCSE styling and the new MCITP/TS look.) I agree with Alice, it would be cool if you guys put together a post of kind of a timeline of the designs over the years.
  • I really like that retro certificate - it doesn t have "Certificate of Excellence" plastered over as if it was issued to B Simpson from Springfield Uni.! IMHO the wording should be kept as on 70-001! C:\>park
  • I fill so thrilled ur program and so much to join. please can i join ur u. I m a ugandan by nationality
  • Well, that s great. Really really great. I prefer to see the latest design styles of MCP Certs.
  • When the first certificates for the new generation of certs rolled out I was very vocal in my opinion of how horrible they looked. I have to give credit where its due - the new certs look nice. I just wish we could still get them in printed form without paying the ridiculous "handling" fee.
  • What are digital certificates.
