NO WAY! I Got Picked!

Chris Williams

I saw the ‘advertisement’ for Be the Next Microsoft Employee (BTNME) in my daily email from SQL Server Central (www.sqlservercentral.com).  I’m not sure why I did it…but I followed the link.  I guess I wasn’t thinking ‘Why’, more ‘Why not?’  These kinds of things don’t happen to me.  I never get selected for this kind of thing.

I was so shocked when I found out.  I told my wife immediately.  She was also shocked.  We were both keenly aware of the opportunity that was being presented here.  It’s nothing short of awesome.  There really wasn’t much discussion about ‘if’ I should go.  Surprising, since she is going to be left at home for a fair amount of time with our two small boys, while I’m off chasing a dream.  I’m not so sure I could be as supportive if the shoe was on the other foot.  Neither of us has ever been a way for more than a few days.  It’ll be a sacrifice, but I’m NOT getting into this to lose.

Even with that bold attitude, my stomach has been in knots as I prepare to leave for Seattle.  This is a serious challenge.  There’s a lot on the line here.  As people at work have found out about my ‘adventure’, they’ve been really positive offering many words of encouragement and support.

My biggest fear is that I’ll make a fool of myself.  That would be horrendously embarrassing.  I feel confident in my skills, but you just never know in this type of ‘reality’ scenario.  Anything can happen.  I’m going to give it my best effort and see where that lands me - hopefully, at the top.  It’ll be a game-changer for me and my family.  The Seattle-area is awesome, working for Microsoft would be amazing, but it’ll be a MAJOR change for us.  I’m sure the other candidates are experiencing similar desires and angst.  Here’s hoping for a great competition.

Microsoft calls it a Service Engineer - basically system support, service delivery, administration - that kind of thing.  Thanks!
